2016 Chelmsford Stakes Nominations Released

August 29th, 2016

Twelve runners have been included in nominations for Saturday’s featured 2016 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m); highlighted by the likely second appearance of champion mare Winx at Royal Randwick Racecourse.

Breaking through for her maiden win at the highest level in the 2015 edition of the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m), Winx returned last spring for success in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) before comfortably winning the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).

Capping her year with a career-best performance for success in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m), the Street Cry mare resumed this year to win the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) before taking out each of the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) and Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).

Having comfortably taken out the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) first-up a fortnight ago, Winx should simply prove too good in the Chelmsford Stakes 2016.

Trainer Chris Waller is set to dominate the 2016 Chelmsford Stakes after including a further five of his stable starts in nominations.

Jacquinot Bay ran a pleasing second in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) last start, and has been included in 2016 Chelmsford Stakes nominations.

Jacquinot Bay has been a strong and consistent performer for Lindsay Park through recent season; posting a career-total of thirteen wins and ten minors through 47 starts, since debuting for the late, great Guy Walter in 2012.

Resuming this time for consecutive wins in the Rod Johnson Handicap (1400m) and Brian Beattie Handicap (1400m), the Galileo gelding was unable to make any impact when eighth in the Listed Winter Championship Final (1600m), but responded well in the PB Lawrence Stakes last start.

James Cummings has an understandably high opinion of Prized Icon, and the three-year-old will be charged with carrying only 50.5kgs if he accepts into the Chelmsford Stakes field.

A standout two-year-old, Prized Icon ran third in the Group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) on March 6th before charging home for second in the Group 3 The Schweppervescence (1400m).

Breaking through for a maiden race win in the Listed Fernhill Handicap (1600m), the More Than Ready colt produced a dominant performance to win the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) only one week.

Having run on for a credible fourth in the Group 3 Up And Coming Stakes (1300m) with a race-high 61kgs on August 20th, Prized Icon is undoubtedly the unknown factor in 2016 Chelmsford Stakes nominations.

The 2016 Chelmsford Stakes field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
