Complacent is the 2015 Chelmsford Stakes Winner

September 6th, 2015

Complacent spent close to two years away from racing through several unfortunate ailments, but the Group 1 winner has produced a monumental effort to lead from start to finish in Saturday’s featured Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Randwick in only his second start since returning.

Jumping from the gates well, Complacent was allowed to stride forward and take up a position at the fore of the field of 16; setting a reasonable tempo alongside stable mate Hartnell and popular mare Royal Descent.

Receiving an easy run at the head of the pack, jockey Sam Clipperton allowed the stallion time to balance upon rounding onto the final straight, and the son of Authorized only continued to find in hitting the line a length and half in the clear of Kermadec; Royal Descent boxing on for a brave third.

Clipperton delivered a performance beyond his years in the 2015 Chelmsford Stakes and was quick to lay all the praise on the quality of Complacent in the success.

“That was alright. He just did it on his ear,” Clipperton said.

“He got into a lovely rhythm and was happy. From the 500m I just left him slide up and he just got quicker and quicker and built.

“At the furlong I could sense them there to challenge and to my horse’s credit he fended them off – it was a very impressive effort.”

Trainer John O’Shea has been thrilled with the class and fortitude displayed by Complacent since his return to work and racing, and is confident there is still plenty in store for the five-year-old this season.

“He’s a great horse, but you don’t need me to tell you that – you only have to look at his record,” O’Shea said.

“He presented beautifully every time we’ve brought him and he’s just raced up to it.

“He’s raced up to his work and it’s rewarding to everyone.

“He’s a magnificent horse and hopefully we can keep him sound and that’s not the last win he’ll have this season.

“I think the key for him is he needs to stay in Sydney. We’ll have a chat and find another race for him. We had planned to run him in the Hill and I think that’s a nice progression for him.”

Punters who backed Complacent to win the 2015 Chelmsford Stakes with have been paid out on generous $41 for success!
