September 2nd, 2015

As expected, leading Sydney trainer Chris Waller is set to dominate the running of the Chelmsford Stakes after confirming eleven of his stables starts in the race’s final field, including Kermadec, Hawkspur and Who Shot Thebarman.

More than announcing himself to the Australian racing community through the recent Autumn Carnival, Kermadec returned for a credible fourth in the Group 3 Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m); progressing to third in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) before a luckless run for fourth when blocked late in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m).

Boxing on for third in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m), the Teofilo entire returned to the paddock after beating a particularly classy field to the line in the major Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on Day 1 of The Championships.

Needing some luck in running after drawing the somewhat awkward barrier 13, Kermadec will be partnered by Glen Boss this weekend.

Hawkspur has won the two most recent editions of the Chelmsford Stakes and is positioned well in barrier 7, with Tommy Berry aboard for a successful hat-trick.

A Group 1 winner having taken out the 2013 edition of the Queensland Derby (2400m), Hawkspur failed to make anything of a competitive impact when eleventh in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) first-up on August 22nd but should have taken priceless condition from the run.

Who Shot Thebarman will be set for a second appearance in the Melbourne Cup this season and will begin his campaign in the 2015 Chelmsford Stakes from barrier 16.

Returning in autumn for fifth in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), the Yamanin Vital gelding ran fourth in each of the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 The BMW (2400m) before capping his season an agonizingly-close second in the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m).

Precedence will be set on a mission to deliver the late, great Bart Cummings a 13th success in the 2015 Melbourne Cup and will also begin his campaign in the Chelmsford Stakes.

Ending his 2014 campaign with his best ever result in the race that stops a nation when sixth, Precedence returned this year for fifth in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes (1800m) before immediately returning to the paddock.

Having trialled well in the lead-up to his competitive return, trainer James Cummings is only hoping to see the veteran son of Zabeel hit the line well in the Chelmsford Stakes.

Precedence will leave from the rails draw in the 2015 Chelmsford Stakes, while Sydney Cup winner Grand Marshal has been charged with overcoming the outside alley.
