Just nine runners have been confirmed for this weekend’s Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick, offering punters exceptional value from a betting point of view and several key opportunities to place a winning bet.
Having returned to racing in excellent form this season, Team Hawkes-trained Entirely Platinum has opened as and maintained status as outright favourite for success in the 2014 Chelmsford Stakes, currently available at odds of $3.30, ahead of clear market mover Royal Descent ($4), Sacred Falls and Criterion; currently sharing the third line of betting at $5 odds at leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
Will Entirely Platinum justify favouritism and win the 2014 Chelmsford Stakes, or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?
One of the standout performers of the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Criterion will have to overcome the slightly wide barrier 8 but offers punters exceptional value for money at $5 odds in Chelmsford Stakes betting markets. Unlucky not to break through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing through the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, the Sebring entire returned to the track in career best form this year; finishing a credible fourth amongst classy competition in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) first-up before charging home for second in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) a fortnight later. Disappointing when eighth in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 15th, Criterion responded impressively in taking out both the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) and Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m). Having finished third in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) first-up on August 23rd, Criterion appears to have returned in similarly impressive form and is a great chance for success in the 2014 Chelmsford Stakes.
Royal Descent ($4)
Running on for second in the Warwick Stakes first-up Royal Descent has returned to racing this year in typically strong and consistent form and is a great chance of success in the 2014 Chelmsford Stakes. Finishing fourth in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) first-up on March 1st, Royal Descent was unlucky to be blocked for a run in the final straight and fifth in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) on March 22nd, but responded well when second to Sacred Falls in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on Day 1 of The Championships. Allocated the ideal barrier 1, the Redoute’s Choice mare has been confirmed to be partnered by renowned jockey Kerrin McEvoy and is more than worth considerations for a Chelmsford Stakes bet.
Entirely Platinum ($3.30)
Displaying a keen turn of foot to overcome a classy field and win the Canterbury Hurlstone RSL Handicap (1400m) first-up on August 16th, Entirely Platinum is yet to receive much more than a sprinkling of bets for success in the Chelmsford Stakes, but is worth consideration. A standout for the Hawkes stable over autumn, the Pentire gelding won each of his first three starts, including the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (1900m) before finishing a fighting fourth in the Group 3 Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m) on April 5th.
