Vandyke Targets Chelmsford Stakes 2013 With Imported Stayer

August 1st, 2013

The Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes is set to run at Royal Randwick Racecourse on Saturday September 7, 2013.

The race takes place over a distance of 1,600 metres and is worth $175,000 in prize money.

The 2013 Chelmsford Stakes is run under weight-for-age conditions and is open to horses aged three-years-old and upwards.

Scheduled as part of Chelmsford Stakes Day, the race shares it’s program with the Group 2 Furious Stakes, Group 3 Concorde Stakes, Group 3 Tramway Handicap, Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality Handicap.

Lightly raced stayer, Prince Cheri, will be tested in the 2013 Chelmsford Stakes next month.

Trainer David Vandyke was over the moon with his last start win in the $35,000 Lynch Contractors Handicap at Canterbury in March and feels that he can step up in time for the spring carnival.

“He is a very exciting horse, his race at Canterbury was exceptional,” Vandyke told Racing Ahead.

“He settled back in the field and found the line well.

“I imagine that he is going to be a serious stayer who will possibly measure up in the spring.

“He is a very relaxed horse, he I like that on the track and in his races.

“It is hard to know how far he is going to get because he is so relaxed.”

Prince Cheri has his first two race starts in France before being imported to Vandyke’s stables in late 2012.
