Theseo Dominates The 2010 Chelmsford Stakes In Lead Up To Cox Plate

The Sydney Spring Racing Carnival continued at the Royal Randwick Racecourse this weekend, with the feature race being the Group Two Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) on Saturday afternoon.

Weight-for-age powerhouse runner Theseo grabbed the win ahead of a quality nine-horse field.

The Danewin gelding has given trainer Gai Waterhouse hope that she could finally win her target event this spring, the 2010 Cox Plate.

It’s one of the few features the legendary trainer has not victored in, but with Theseo in such fine form she believes she can.

The seven-year-old saw talented jockey Nash Rawiller take to the saddle, and the pair were unstoppable.

Theseo led for the entire race to defeat a gallantly finishing Metal Bender by a length into second place.

The Chris Waller-trained Metal Bender was another favourite among punters at for the win, and certainly came close.

The Group Two Warwick Stakes winner is still ahead in the early market Cox Plate betting odds, but there is still a long way to go.

Peter Snowden-trained Purple finished a further three-quarters of a length back in third in what was a convincing run.

Theseo will stick in Sydney to run in the Group One George Main Stakes (1600m) on September 25, before starting his Melbourne campaign in the Group One Yalumba Stakes (2000m) on October 9 as a lead up to the illustrious Cox Plate on October 23.

Also taking place on Saturday was the Group Two Furious Stakes (1400m) which saw another Waterhouse horse win – More Strawberries, and the Group Three Tramway Quality Handicap (1400m) along with five other great races.
