This Saturday Royal Randwick Racecourse will host the next feature meeting of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival headlined by the $175,000 Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m).
Just 12 weight-for-age runners have been nominated for the 2010 Chelmsford Stakes, but the diminutive size of the field in no way takes away from the class of the contenders.
Top hopes sure to dominate the markets at SportsBet if they run in the Chelmsford on Saturday include Chris Waller’s last start winning trio in the Warwick Stakes, Metal Bender, Triple Honour and Danleigh.
All three are among the entries for Saturday, with Metal Bender the favoured stablemate after he won the Warwick Stakes first-up last weekend adding to his impressive $1.47 million in career prizemoney, while Danleigh is likely to start in the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington instead.
Waller will face a tough test, however, as a number of other highly rated turf stars are also set to start including Gai Waterhouse’s Group 1 winner Theseo, one of the early 2010 Melbourne Cup favourites Jessicabeel and the John Thompson-trained duo of Count Encosta and Run For Naara.
The John O’Shea-trained Jessicabeel is an interesting contender, the five-year-old Zabeel mare resuming racing after she won the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) last start back in April.
Following her Sydney Cup win, Jessicabeel is already equal third-favourite to win the 150th Melbourne Cup this November paying $17 through SportsBet.
